Advice on Presenting and Selling Your Car

Clean it

A clean car shows care, whereas dirt devalues price. Clean the inside and out, remembering to vacuum and wax. Consider a full service car wash or valet.

Fix it

Fix what is easy to replace, such as lenses and headlights. Tires should have legal tread. Consider repairing body damage (take guidance) or get a written estimate of the repair cost and negotiate. Touch up small scratches and chips. Windshield damage should be discussed with a windshield repair shop for economical repairs/replacement. Dealers will subtract improvement costs from your car.

Service Records

Ensure all records are complete and presentable. If records are missing, dealerships may provide copies.

Be Honest

State the facts regarding the condition of your car and be honest about serious problems or repairs. Sell your car ‘as is’. Unless you are a dealer, you are not required to provide warranty, however, if you falsely describe condition, the buyer may have some come back.

Bill

Include a statement that the car is sold "as is", keeping a copy for your records. This establishes the date of sale and will protect you from liability. Keep the car until the cheque has cleared.
